back to the grind

After a much-needed Mexican vacation consisting of sun, sea, and fun, it's time for me to get back to business. But seeing as how I literally just walked in the door after a full day of travel, I think business can wait for just 12 more hours, no?

daily duds: bad to the bone (only not so much)

Several of my awesome readers suggested that I not only go for the degree in Fashion Marketing, but that I also apply for the Style Advisor job mentioned in yesterday’s post. So I buckled down and began applying for the degree and the job. Yesterday was a pretty chaotic day; in addition to planning for my future, there was some cleaning, some laundry, and some packing…I’m going to Cozumel next week (um, can you say stoked?!)! But in the midst of all the madness, I paused for a few hours to volunteer at Attitudes & Attire, and because I felt so badass since I was on such a roll charting the course of my yet-to-come opportunities, I paired some black (faux) leather with some black lace and added some pearls to sweeten up the bad girl vibe (because who am I kidding? I don’t have a bad girl bone in my body).

haul of fame: fall 2010 (part five) and some random thoughts

I know that it’s been crickets for the last week or so, but I haven’t left the blogosphere. I’ve been a bit busy and I’m still trying to get the hang of taking pictures of myself sans photographer. So far, every picture I’ve taken has been hideously unsuitable for viewing by the public (or just plain hideous). But rest assured, I’ll soon master the fine art of self-photography, my daily duds posts will resume, and we’ll back to our regularly scheduled program. But today I want to share with you what I picked up on a recent thrift haul. I know that a lot of people shop at thrift stores for vintage pieces that tell a story. I’m not one of those people. I shop at thrift stores simply to get modern fashion on the cheap. There’s absolutely no shame in my game—especially when that game involves a three dollar Dolce & Gabbana skirt…

DOLCE & GABBANA SKIRT. Can you believe I bought this skirt for three dollars?! Three. What’s not to love about that price? Or the skirt’s pleats? Or its brown waistband? This skirt is slightly reminiscent of a D&G skirt that I saw in a recent issue of Lucky…except it was a lot less costly.

ZARA NAVY V-NECK TOP. Yes, I’m aware that this top is eerily similar to the sweater I wore in this post, but the material is different (read: better) and I think it will be perfect for layering.

NEWPORT NEWS LEOPARD SKIRT. I debated about buying this skirt for a while but finally figured I could add a black turtleneck, black tights, and black pumps…and let the skirt be a statement piece.

ISAAC MIZRAHI FOR TARGET PANTS. I actually thought these were jeans, and I was wrong, but that didn’t keep me from adding them to my wardrobe. The fit is perfect, the length is just right, and I like them. So what else matters?

BROWN SLACKS. Like the pants above, these fit flawlessly and they’re just long enough. I think it would be perfect with a brown v-neck sweater that I can layer over a bright ruffled blouse.

BCBGIRLS LEOPARD HEELS. So I didn’t actually buy these because they were a size 6 ½ (damn my size 8 feet!), but they’re so cute, I thought they definitely deserved mention. I passed by these about 4 times—once to see if they were as cute up close as they were from afar, once to see if they actually were a size 6 ½, once to see if the size had somehow magically changed from a 6 ½ to an 8, and once to say a reluctant goodbye to a shoe that would have been an amazing addition to my shoe collection—but had to leave them on the rack.

In other news, I finally ordered MiniCards from Moo
. I can’t wait until they arrive. I ordered 100 and I think the hardest part was deciding which photos to include on the cards. I started out with about 32, then narrowed it down to 20 (so that each photo would be on 5 cards), but I think I only ended up using maybe 14 photos. I’m really excited to see how they turn out and I’ll definitely do a post when I get them.

Also, I recently started looking into going back to school for an Associate’s degree in Fashion Marketing but the thing is, I already have a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism with an emphasis in Advertising and a minor in Marketing. I’ve looked at the Fashion Marketing degree plan, and a lot of the classes are classes that I already took during undergrad. I’m really excited about the classes I haven’t taken though—Basic Color Theory and Application, Fashion Trends, Textiles. So despite the possibility of academic déjà vu, I’m leaning towards applying for a degree in Fashion Marketing…

And in other fashion-related news, I recently discovered a job posting for a Style Advisor at a well-known fashion retailer. I never thought about styling as a profession, but part of me thinks I could do it (and do it really well). Then there’s that part of me that is so scared that I could be good at it that I talk myself out of it. Lame, huh? But I figure I don’t have anything to lose. Who knows? I’m just going to go for it. Throw caution to the wind, apply for the position and hope like hell that I’m the chosen one.

So tell me: What do you think of my haul items? Have you purchased Moo cards before? Should I go for a degree in Fashion Marketing? Am I out of my mind to think I could be a style advisor?

daily duds: gray and camel (minus the humps)

Camel and gray has been this season’s much-talked-about color combination, and there’s no denying that the two hues look good together. So when I grabbed breakfast with a friend this morning, I gave the combination a test drive* and wore a bit of gray and a bit of camel --with a bit leopard thrown in for good measure--by pairing a pleated skirt (last seen here) with a thin sweater and my fave leopard print pumps. I’m crazy about camel and gray together, and I can’t wait to pair this season’s it color with other colors.

*We have a few more days of nice weather (i.e. in the 70s) before the temperatures drop, so I played around with the self-timer on my camera because once it gets really cold, I doubt I’ll want to take pictures outside. I’m such a wuss.

your two cents: role reversal

A while back, I picked up this chartreuse cardigan at Target simply because I loved the color and knew it wouldn’t be hard to find a place for it in my wardrobe.

Shortly after my purchase, I saw a similar-hued Marc Jacobs cardigan on a model in a magazine spread. Interestingly enough, she was wearing the cardigan backwards. Yeah, you read that right. So after seeing this simple DIY on P.S. I Made This..., I’m tempted add some stylish buttons to my cardigan and put it in reverse.

So tell me: Would you try wearing a cardigan backwards or does it remind you too much of a choking hazard—-or a strait jacket?

words around the web

I'm the first to admit that I'm a total fashion magazine devotee--as soon as they hit my mailbox (or the newsstands), I read them from cover to cover. But despite my fondness for glossies, I still like day-to-day fashion news from the Net, so I've rounded up a few interesting and timely fashion-related articles from around the web:

Enjoy!

daily duds: teacher's pet

Today was Parent Conference day at Micah’s school (which meant no school for him) so while he hung out with his uncle, I met with his teachers to see how he’s doing in school. (He’s doing great!) It was also freezing this morning—the overnight low here in Dallas was in the 30s—so I definitely needed to be warm while I was out and about. I ended up pairing plaid pants with a cream sweater and adding red shoes for a pop of color. I accessorized with three necklaces and a cluster ring. This outfit was very comfortable and I look forward to mixing these pants and this sweater with other pieces in my wardrobe in the future.

fraternal twins: ruthie davis and h by halston studded pumps

Yesterday, I discovered the long-lost relative to a stunning pair of Miu Miu platforms that I’m certain will never see the inside of my closet. Today, I found a pair of studded stilettos that may be the next of kin to these exceedingly expensive Ruthie Davis pumps I lusted after in this post:

Bakers is currently selling these H by Halston ANGELICA suede pumps which are similar in style and at $90, can give you the look for less at a fraction of the $1295 it costs to own the Ruthie Davis STUD stilettos.

The ANGELICA pumps also come in red and navy, so there may be a new addition to my shoe collection in the near future…

fraternal twins: miu miu and aldo platform mary janes

Remember this post where I was drooling over this stunning (and expensive) pair of Miu Miu patent penny loafer platforms?

Well, while perusing Aldo recently, I came across this pair of glossy Mary Janes for a price that’s much less than the costly one attached to the Miu Miu platforms.

While Aldo’s version isn’t as detailed as the Miu Miu’s, I think the pair would serve its purpose in my wardrobe. And while the $90 price tag is definitely more manageable than the Miu Miu’s pricey pumps, I don’t know if the look is similar enough for me to shell out almost $100 for them. What can I say? I love a good pair of penny loafer platforms—even if they’re so expensive that I have to admire them from my computer screen…

daily duds: wordy wardrobe

I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately (hence last week’s mini-hiatus), but I hate to wallow for too long, so I quickly pulled myself out of it. Plus it’s hard to stay in a bad mood when my son is in the other room and randomly shouts, “I love you Mama!” (which happens quite frequently. Sigh. He melts my heart.) And like my son, the t-shirt in today’s post has a way of helping me chase away the doldrums.

I wore a black denim-y skirt and wore the tee over a black and gray v-neck button-down. The tee has six words on it: imagine, inspire, educate, create, liberate, and love.

I added socks (you can also see my previous attempts at the socks-with-heels trend here and here) and maroon pumps.

I accessorized with a cluster ring, a black clutch, cream earrings, and a bracelet that, like my tee, is covered in words. I topped it off with a black beret.

haul of fame: fall 2010 (part four)

The temperatures are finally starting to drop here in Dallas, so I’ll be able to start wearing some of the items I’ve picked up during my previous hauls (seen here, here, and here), but that hasn’t stopped me from picking up a few more things to add to my wardrobe.

HOUNDSTOOTH SWEATER. As much as I like color, sometimes nothing beats the classic combination of black and white (or off-white). I tend to choose items like this because I can add a pop of color, and I’ve already paired this sweater with something that is definitely going to make it pop.

GOLD SWEATER. Ever since I saw this sweater, I’ve been on the hunt for a gold sweater or gold sweater. I honestly think this gold sweater is a bit “grandpa-ish,” but I’m sure it’s pretty cozy and I’ll definitely make it work for me.

CREAM SWEATER. I think the simplicity of this sweater is part of its charm. (Plus it’s really soft!) I would love to pile on a ton of pearl necklaces and pair this with a cream maxi skirt.

GOLD SKIRT. I think the Wendi Reed sweater mentioned above has definitely triggered an obsession with finding all things gold because I also picked up this wool Michael Kors skirt. I haven’t decided what I’m going to wear with it yet, but I’ve been shopping my closet a lot lately and am sure I’ll find something.

POLKA DOT SKIRT. I’ve been dipping my toe in the pattern-mixing pool lately (see here and here) and I’ve thought about pairing this skirt with a patterned top made of similar colors. I’m not completely sure yet, but if all else fails, I can pair it with a black turtleneck and black tights.
